About the Authors

Marcella Luiso Flanagan is the author of American Destiny: A True Story of Family, Roots, and the Journey Between Two Worlds, co-written with her niece, Phyllis Clare Orlowski. A pioneering figure for women in business, Marcella built a distinguished career as a fashion designer and manufacturing executive beginning in the 1960s. In 1977, she became the founding executive director of the New York Association of Women Business Owners and helped organize the first “Salute to Women in Business Week” in New York City, advancing opportunities for women in commerce and leadership.
Now in her 90s, Marcella turns to storytelling, preserving her family’s return to postwar Italy in 1948 and the cultural legacy that shaped generations.
Phyllis Clare Orlowski is a retired educator, advocate, and writer who collaborated with her aunt, Marcella Luiso Flanagan, to bring American Destiny to life. A former high school Spanish teacher and varsity tennis coach, Phyllis has long been committed to education and advocacy, including work supporting individuals with dyslexia and promoting access to literacy. Fluent in multiple languages and deeply engaged in issues of cultural understanding and family advocacy, she served as a steward and creative partner in shaping her aunt’s memoir — helping preserve a story of heritage, belonging, and resilience for a new generation of readers. She resides in upstate New York and is the mother of three sons, enjoys oil painting, and traveling the world, especially to visit relatives in Italy.

An Italian American
Family Story of
Immigration & Identity
Bari, the capital of the Apulia (Puglia) region in southern Italy, sits along the Adriatic Sea, long serving as a cultural and commercial crossroads between the East and West. Over centuries, the city has been shaped by Byzantine, Norman, & Mediterranean influences, giving it a layered identity rooted in resilience and exchange.
In American Destiny, Bari is not merely a setting but a living presence. The city’s postwar landscape, cultural traditions, and culinary rituals deepen the emotional stakes of the family’s decision to remain in Italy or return to America. Understanding Bari’s history provides essential context for the memoir’s central question: what does it mean to belong to a place that has shaped you, even when life pulls you elsewhere?

“Stories spilled like wine, of America, of the war, of births and deaths, of letters never sent but always meant. Someone brought out an accordion, and soon old songs floated up into the dusk like prayers. The courtyard glowed with laughter, music, and the scent of espresso brewing strong and sweet on a nearby stove.”

Life in Italy After World War II
Bari, the capital of the Apulia (Puglia) region in southern Italy, has long served as a crossroads of cultures, commerce, and faith. Situated along the Adriatic Sea, the city has been shaped by centuries of influence — from its role as the Byzantine capital of southern Italy to its prominence as a Norman port and religious center following the arrival of the relics of Saint Nicholas.
During World War II, Bari was heavily bombed and suffered significant damage, including the 1943 harbor disaster that remains one of the war’s lesser-known tragedies. Although, ironically, some areas of Bari were left untouched by war, like San Giovanni Rotondo. By 1948, when the Argenti family returned, the city was still rebuilding — physically, economically, and emotionally.
Yet despite hardship, Bari retained its deep cultural identity. Family life revolved around shared meals, neighborhood relationships, faith, traditions, and pride in regional cuisine rooted in seasonal ingredients
and simple preparation.
