Author Talk Explores Family, History, and Identity in “American Destiny: From Fascism to Fashion”
Cooperstown, NY — April 16, 2026, 1:00 PM — Join local author Phyllis Orlowski for a compelling and deeply personal talk, “American Destiny: From Fascism to Fashion,” to be held in the Community Room at the Clark Sports Center.
During this special presentation, Orlowski will share the remarkable story behind American Destiny, a book she co-authored with her Aunt Marcella. The narrative follows the Argenti family’s emotional 1948 journey as they return from New York to southern Italy after 18 years away. Having been forced to abandon their homeland during the rise of fascism, the family hopes to reclaim their life, land, and identity.
What they encounter upon their return is both unexpected and deeply challenging. As old ties resurface and new realities emerge, the family is faced with a profound and agonizing decision: should they remain in Italy or return to America in search of a different future?
Blending history, heritage, and heartfelt storytelling, Orlowski’s talk offers insight into the immigrant experience, the lasting impact of political upheaval, and the enduring question of where one truly belongs.
Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the book, ask questions, and engage in discussion following the presentation.
