American Destiny Memoir Celebrates Italian American Family, Heritage and the Journey Between Two Worlds

New press release highlights Marcella Luiso Flanagan and Phyllis Clare Orlowski’s award-winning memoir of family, migration, Italian American heritage and the choices that shape generations.
American Destiny: A True Story of Family, Roots, and the Journey Between Two Worlds, the memoir by Marcella Luiso Flanagan and co-author Phyllis Clare Orlowski, is the subject of a newly released national press announcement published through EIN Presswire.
The September 23, 2026 release introduces readers to the true story behind American Destiny: one Italian American family’s journey between New York and Puglia, Italy, and a pivotal decision that would influence generations to come.
A True Italian American Story of Family and Belonging
At the heart of American Destiny is the Argenti family and a question familiar to generations of immigrant families: Where is home?
In 1948, 18 years after first leaving Italy for New York, Marcella’s family returned to Italy with plans to rebuild the life they had left behind. Five months later, they returned to New York for good.
Told through the perspective of 14-year-old Marcie, American Destiny explores what that experience meant for the individual members of the family and how decisions about home, opportunity and belonging continued to shape their lives long after the journey ended.
The family’s roots extend from New York to Cassano delle Murge and Acquaviva delle Fonti in the province of Bari, Puglia. Throughout the memoir, those places come alive through family memories, regional traditions, dialect, faith and food.
The recently published press release also recognizes American Destiny as a Silver Award winner in the Readers’ Choice Book Awards Adult Non-Fiction category.
Preserving Italian American Heritage Through Food and Family Traditions
Food plays an important role in the story, not simply as a reminder of Italy, but as a way family history is preserved and passed from one generation to the next.
Seven family recipes are woven throughout American Destiny, connecting dishes to the relatives and memories behind them. Among them are Nonna Angela’s Almond Biscotti, Nonna Marzia’s Biscotti dal Anice, Zia Camilla’s Homemade Orecchiette, and traditional Christmas Cartellate and Vin Cotto.
These recipes, together with the customs and stories surrounding them, offer readers a personal look at how Italian American families have maintained connections to their heritage across countries and generations.
From Postwar Italy to Fashion and Women in Business
The press release also highlights another chapter of Marcella Luiso Flanagan’s story: the remarkable life that followed her family’s return to New York.
After developing an interest in design, Marcella graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and began a fashion career that would span more than four decades. Her work included designing childrenswear for the Cheryl Tiegs line at Sears and later operating her own boutique in Bronxville, New York, where she sold her Achievers label.
In 1977, Marcella founded the New York Association of Women Business Owners and organized New York City’s first Salute to Women in Business Week.
Her professional journey adds another dimension to American Destiny: a story not only about looking back at where we come from, but also about what we build from the experiences we carry with us.
An Award-Winning Memoir About the Meaning of Home
Today, Marcella and her niece Phyllis Clare Orlowski have transformed decades of family memories into a story that reaches beyond their own family.
Through migration and return, recipes and traditions, faith, family relationships and the pursuit of a new life, American Destiny preserves one family’s history while exploring questions that continue to resonate with Italian American families and descendants of immigrants today.
As Marcella explains in the press release, “Leaving the place you love changes you, and it changes the people who stay behind, too.”
