Celebrate Italian American Heritage Month With a Family Recipe

Italian American Heritage Month: A Taste of the Ancestors
October is Italian American Heritage Month—a time to celebrate the stories, traditions, sacrifices, and contributions of Italian Americans who helped shape America.
For my family, heritage isn’t just something written in a family tree. It lives in our stories, our faith, our traditions—and especially in our food.
In honor of my Italian relatives, I made Zia Camilla’s Amaretti cookies, a recipe that comes straight from the pages of American Destiny: A True Story of Family, Roots, and the Journey Between Two Worlds.
And the recipe couldn’t be simpler.
Zia Camilla’s Amaretti
Ingredients:
4 cups chopped almonds
1½ cups sugar
3 egg whites
3 tablespoons almond extract
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
¼ teaspoon baking powder
Mix the ingredients together, form the cookies, and bake until they are lightly golden and delicious.
But these cookies are about more than six ingredients.
They are about memory.
There is something special about filling your kitchen with the scent of almonds, sugar, and chocolate and imagining the kitchens of the generations who came before us. Our Italian ancestors brought more than suitcases when they came to America. They brought recipes, faith, language, traditions, and the determination to build a better life for their children.
So this Italian American Heritage Month, make something Italian.
Make your grandmother’s pasta. Bake your Nonna’s biscotti. Roll out homemade pasta. Make a pot of Sunday sauce. Or try Zia Camilla’s amaretti.
And as the wonderful Italian aromas fill your home, take a moment to remember those who came before you—the people whose courage, hard work, and love made your life possible.
Keep their stories alive. Keep their recipes alive.
Because sometimes, the sweetest way to remember where we came from is to bring our ancestors back into the kitchen.
Buon appetito—and Buon Mese del Patrimonio Italo-Americano! 🇮🇹❤️🇺🇸
Zia Camilla’s Amaretti recipe appears on page 212 of American Destiny: A True Story of Family, Roots, and the Journey Between Two Worlds.
This would also make a lovely companion piece to your Instagram post because the blog gives you room to tell the emotional family story behind the recipe, rather than just sharing the ingredients.
